The best way to learn any language is to immerse yourself as much as you can. This is the teaching method used by most TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) schools worldwide. These schools purposefully hire teachers with no local language schools so that the teacher is not tempted to explain a difficult point in anything but English and students are fully immersed in the English language from day one.

Outside of the classroom, whether you are still learning or looking to keep your English Language skills sharp, there are easy ways to keep practicing. English podcasts are one of the best ways to keep up your learning. There are literally thousands to choose from and options suitable for all ages, English levels, and interests.

Business English Pod

For anyone learning English for business, Business English Pod offers millions of lessons that will help you improve your business-specific vocabulary, listening, and conversation skills. Each lesson is modeled on specific use, such as business presentations or negotiating in business deals. “I used Business English Pod to help me improve my understanding of how to use English in a formal and professional environment. It has been useful for school and job interviews.” Says, Shilpa Avari an ESL student at State of Writing and Paper Fellows.

Three BBC Podcasts For Learning English

The BBC has been broadcasting for nearly 100 years and has never failed to move with the times and serve its listeners worldwide.

There are several BBC podcasts for learning English including ‘6 Minute English’. This podcast uses everyday topics such as the internet, books, and food delivery to help listeners practice useful English language for everyday situations. There are three versions of 6 Minute English – one for listening, one for grammar, and one for vocabulary.

‘The English We Speak’ is another BBC podcast specifically created for English language students. In these bite-size podcasts, the presenters tackle a new phrase each week to help you understand what it means and how to use it.  This podcast is a useful way to stay up to speed with popular and topical phrases.

Last but not least, ‘Desert Island Discs’ podcasts are a must for anyone who wants to mix their learning with their love of music. On each podcast, a different celebrity or well-known guest chooses eight songs, a book, and a luxury that they would take to a desert island with them. You can listen to a new guest each week and select shows from the archive that include guests such as Peaky Blinders star Helen McCrory, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and comedian Ricky Gervais as well as a whole host of intellectuals, writers, illustrators, and business leaders.

The topics of the podcast vary from books and music to UFOs and regional accents.

Better @ English – Real English Conversations Podcast

On a mission to help non-native speakers improve their English Better @ English is a great podcast for anyone who wants to become familiar with more relaxed, day to day, conversation styles. Each lesson comes with a transcript and vocabulary notes to help you get the most from listening. Topics vary and you could find yourself listening to a podcast about telling the time, procrastination, or even office pranks.

“In my classes, I always introduce my students to podcasts together and then encourage them to listen at home when they are relaxing,” Says, Cameron Vaughn a teacher at Boomessays and Dissertation Writing. “Podcasts can help you learn subliminally, like how you suddenly know the words to a song you didn’t actively learn”.

When you decide on which podcast suits you best make yourself a promise that you will listen to an episode at least three times per week to benefit the most. Ideally, you would listen to more than one type of English podcast each week as this will help you become familiar with accents, phrasing, and excel at listening.
