What is a possessive noun?
Possessive nouns are used to show ownership or possession. Therefore, we use possessive nouns to show who or what owns or has possession of something.
There are rules and guidelines that students are expected to use to get the correct possessive form of nouns
Examples of possessive nouns
Singular possessive nouns
Rule 1: To get the possessive form of singular nouns (people, places, or things), we add an apostrophe+s, (‘s), at the end of the noun.
Example: This car belongs to my father – This is my father’s car.
Rule 2: To form a singular possessive noun from a noun ending with the letter s, we add an apostrophe after the noun.
Example: Which book belongs to Moses? – Which is Moses’ book?

What is a plural possessive noun?
Rule 3: For regular plural nouns, we get the possessive form by adding an apostrophe after the s.
Example: The students‘ lockers were broken.
Rule 4: To form a plural possessive noun from an irregular plural noun, we use an apostrophe+s after the noun.
Example: The men’s washroom was cleaned.
