How Do You Pay for College?

Student loans concept

Paying for school can be hard, especially if your parents can’t cover the full cost for you. Anything you can add to the coverage can make a big difference in whether or not college is affordable. Whether you want to cover your whole semester or just the cost of books, there are a few things you can do to grow your savings.

Take out Private Student Loans

Student loans can make a lot of sense when you need a way to pay for school. Taking out loans gives you more options, such as the ability to choose an out-of-state school or live on campus instead of at home or in an apartment. When you are considering taking out a loan, it’s a good idea to use a student loan repayment calculator to determine what your monthly payments might be. That will help with financial planning so you can figure out how much you can borrow and still be able to pay it back on time.

Use Your Skills

You likely already have some skills that you can use to earn some cash. For example, perhaps you’ll choose to tutor during the school year or summer in an area you’re good at. Or you could offer social media services to small businesses or do coding. If you’re artistic, you might decide to do drawings of families or pets, especially near the holiday season when people are looking for unique and meaningful gift ideas.

Follow Your Passions

Depending on what you’re interested in, you might be able to make a few dollars from work that aligns with your passions. You’ll be developing your resume while covering some of the expenses of the school. For instance, perhaps you enjoy acting or theater. You might decide to work as a patient to help medical students learn their skills. With this job, you’ll both practice acting while making extra money. Or if you are passionate about politics or social work, you might decide to work with a political campaign. No matter what your interests, you may want to start a blog in an area you’re interested in. Try to work during every break you can, even shorter ones such as spring break and winter break, and you’ll find the money adding up.

Selling Items

If you don’t want to get a job or are afraid you won’t have time for one, think about other ways of making money, such as selling items. For example, if you are crafty, think about setting up an online shop to sell handmade items. From woodworking to painting to jewelry making, there are many chances to sell handmade items. Even if you aren’t good at making handmade items, you can still sell other items. If you are studying graphic design, you might want to look into creating clothing or art designs. And if you like to find a bargain, you might want to consider reselling items. Fix up what you find at estate sales, online listings, or yard sales, and mark them up for more than you paid for them.
