Before making his confession, Aseemanand reportedly told the magistrate that he was aware that he could be given the death penalty, but still wanted to confess. He said he had decided to come clean about his involvement in terror plots because a Muslim boy, Kaleem, was arrested, wrongly it now transpires, for the Mecca Masjid blast. Aseemanand said Kaleem, a mobile phone seller who was his co-inmate in Hyderabad's Chanchalguda jail, had to spend one-anda-half-years behind bars in connection with the Mecca Masjid blast. He landed up in the same jail for a different offence at the time Aseemanand was lodged there.
