It is really difficult to describe a good friend in an exact way. It all depends on people's expectations. However, to explain it in a general-accepted way, I should say that a real friend should have several real honest characteristics.
The first and most important is that he/she must not be two-faced; all the effort would be in vein that way. Secondly, being cool-headed is a royal attitude that a good friend should put into practice. It prevents a relationship to be broken up easily. After that, it behooves a real friend to avoid being absent-minded about their friend's problems and concerns.
To complete this platform of perfection, a real friend had better have the same interests as you; it is,somehow, related to choosing the person that their words are music to your ears! For example, I might prefer someone who is open-minded, whereas someone else would rather go with the close-minded ones! Someone might enjoy hard-working people but more laid-back ones might be more inviting to me; it's just the matter of personal interests in this regard that should be borne in mind.
In conclusion, describing a good friend in detail differs from person to person. First we should realize our expectations and interests and then seek for somebody whose interests match ours. In general, a good friend always shows honesty and mercy among their behavior.

Your second body paragraph is off topic. I suggest you split your first body paragraph into two - the first can deal with honesty and the second with tolerance/acceptance. Remember, each body paragraph is supposed to deal with one point, and any one point should be dealt with in one body paragraph!
