can anyone explain me briefly on this -( Sometimes "approve of" and its opposite "disapprove of" are used incorrectly, for example, "I disapprove of spinach"! You may disapprove of eating spinach, but not of spinach itself! It's a bit too inert to arouse feelings of disapproval! Similarly, "I disapprove of keeping pets in the house", but not "I disapprove of house pets". )why i not ( i disapprove of house pets)

Not everyone agrees on the proper usage of "(dis)approve" and "(dis)approve of".

For example, take a look at the dictionary definition given below. I don't use "approve" without "of" in the case of having a favorable opinion (of conduct), whereas the dictionary does give examples of it.

My personal usage would have:

I disapprove of keeping pets in the house.

Nevertheless, if someone said "I disapprove of house pets", I would fill in the missing information and take it to mean "I disapprove of keeping pets in the house" or - much less likely - "I disapprove of the behavior of house pets".

What would it mean, for example, to say these?

I disapprove of [snakes / mice / wine / sand / cars / gasoline / paper plates / folding tables].

In each case, to my ear, there is a sort of mental shaking of a finger disapprovingly at these things, almost as if to say, for example, "You naughty snakes", which is ludicrous. Do I just look angrily at paper plates when I see them? Do I turn my back on paper plates and leave in a huff when I see them?

I believe there is always some missing information when people use such expressions. For example: I disapprove of setting out paper plates at a formal dinner. / I disapprove of drinking wine in excess.
