Which/which is

hello there~here has 2 sentences, i still don't really understand "which" and "which is" are how to use in sentences, why?1) I don't know which parts went wrong. 2) Taipei city is in a basin which is a disadvantage for scattering heat.

"Which" like "that" can be used in a number of grammatically different ways.

Which book are you reading? (Used as an adjective and indicates a question about what the particular book you are talking about is (out of all books).

I am reading a biology book, which is required for my class. (Used as pronoun and introduces a relative clause).

So your first sentence is like my first sentence and your second sentence is like my second.

Let me paraphrase your two sentences:

1) I don't know which parts went wrong. (There were many parts but I do not know the particular parts that went wrong).

2) Taipei city is in a basin, which is a disadvantage for scattering heat. (Taipei city is in a basin and one of the bad things about being in a basin is that it keeps heat from scattering.)

You use "that" in a similar fashion.

That book is awful. (The book I am pointing at.)

The book that fell on the floor is awful. (Not the books on the shelf, but the one on the floor.)
