Where's it at?

Question

I understand why this is incorrect. But, why do some answer 'between the a and the t'? I'm guessing this is a play-on word, or what ever it's called. But why between the 'a' and 't'? I understand the letters 'i' and 't' fall between 'a' and 't' in alphabetical order, but I don't understand why 'a' is chosen. Why not 'i' instead? And feel free to correct my grammar if you need to.
Oh, and if someone can suggest some books on grammar. College level maybe. But reviewing high school level and covering things I missed would be nice. And books that wouldn't be laborious. Thanks

I've never heard this answer, and I don't understand it.

I believe it's used by some teachers to highlight an unnecessary/inappropriate use of "at" at the end of a sentence.
