When someone is using a lot of energy

Hi

Is there any expression/idiom in English which means that someone is using a lot of his energy (or resources) on something trivial?

Or someone's efforts are not channelized. We have one expression in our language whose literal translation would be:

Don't kill a sparrow with a cannon.

or 

You're killing a sparrow with a cannon.
