What's wrong with this sentence

The sentence is: How did you think it ended?The sentence sounds weird somehow. Can someone please tell me what's wrong, and maybe help me rephrase this sentence?

We sort of assume it's conversational.

I'm thinking of two contexts:

(1.) You complete the story, and the listener expresses great surprise.

You ask him, "What's the matter?? How did you think it ended / would end??"

(2.) You stop your narrative at a critical point, leaving the story unfinished. You ask, teasingly, "How do you think it ends / ended??"

All these options are possible, but the one we're most accustomed to hearing is probably "How do you think it ends?"

"How do you think it ended?" implies that it's a true story.

"How did you think etc." implies that before the story was fully told, you had formed an expectation about the ending
which was not later fulfilled.
