What’s the expression?
Hi Everyone,
There's a room where people are working. Someone enters, unnoticed by the others, puts a lemon under an arm-chair, then leaves, unnoticedly. After a while, the people in the room notice the scent, but have no idea where it comes from and how come it's appeared.
What is it the lemon-man has done? What's the verb and/or expression you'd use to express it?
It must be something close to what steal into or smuggle into would mean I suppose, but without any negative shade or association with illegal acitivity.
Could you, please, help me with this? Thanks!

We use the verb "steal" as in "stealthy" to describe proceeding in an undetected manner. It casts no aspersions on the person's motives. (Think of the spiritual, Steal Away [Home] To Jesus.
