What "if it were not for" means?
Dear,
I don't know what does the following sentence: If it weren't for Jim, this would be in a mess. mean?
Does is mean: Something made this not in a mess because of Jim (If this is in a mess, something bad will happen to Jim)
Or it means: Jim made this out of mess?
