What is the meaning about [shows purpose]?
Hi,
Could any native tell me the truth and right my wrong?
In [The knife is for cutting bread.], [for]in dictionary definited as [shows purpose].
In my naive ideas, the original sentence means: There is the knife being intended to be used in cutting bread.
And can the similars take as the followers?
1. A mother's love is for her child. ------(of me) A mother's love because her child. or A mother's love intended to be used in her child.
2. I've sent my coat away for cleaning. ----(of me) I've sent my coat away because that it should be cleaned.
