What is the best way to ask for a start date?

My employer has not given me a start date.

What is the best way to ask for one?

Should I tell them when I'm available (I am available to start on the [DATE]) or just be straight forward and ask (When would you like me to start?).

That's a good approach - very businesslike. I assume you will be dealing with the Human Resources Department.
