What does the metaphor here mean?

"I've read someplace that in our descending order of might and important human anxieties, Americans suffer the death of a spouse, the loss of a house by fire. and moving to be the worst three things that can happen to us."

That part of "descending order of mighty and important human anxieties" seems to me a metaphor for the course of life? Because anxieties blow off gradually over time?
