What does it mean "due west of ..."?

"Clearwater is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States, nearly due west of Tampa and northwest of St. Petersburg."

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean even after I've checked with all the dictionaries available to me.

Is it wrongfully inserted here?
