Week

My friend told me a week ago before a party that she was really sick with the flu.

A week later we're talking about going to a party the next day, but again she tells me she can't attend the party so I say:

So you hadn't been messing around about having a cold. I seriously thought you were just saying it 'cause you didn't want to party that night.

Can the past perfect tense be used here?

Or should it be:

So you weren't messing around about having a cold. I seriously thought you were just saying it 'cause you didn't want to party that night.
