could somebody explain me the correct usage of the word"irony"..i have heard it many times in movies but never really understood its exact meaning..?

Hi, To me, irony is when you intend to do something in a certain way but which results in something totally different, often humorously... For example, imagine a couple of firemen doing a fire drill and setting fire to a building, which goes well, until the fire spreads to the chief's office, which burns down. Nobody is hurt, but isn't it ironic that what was supposed to be a routine drill, resulted in a mess like that?
