I think that the first and the second interpretations are the most likely
ones. This is because the ghost (Agnes Todd) is simply repeating past events,
possibly in order to let the people know who thought she died because of
a harmless accident. Let them feel the pain she felt when she died a painful
death, caused by her heartless husband who didn't have much use for her,
because of a fling down the village.
I'm also sure about the fact that she wanted them to pass on to everyone
what really happened to her. She does that through Meg, which she first mesmerizes
with her cold and hopeless voice full of fear, which every Samaritan attracts
and subsequently seduces her to go through the same crucial way she did, but
before that could happen Meg's husband and Tom Bett who were just on time
to rescue her, by pulling her back, because of that, she woke up from a dream
that probably was caused by the hypnosis of Agnes Todd. The Soul of Agnes
Todd can finally rest, now that her true story has been revealed.
