I think "If I were him" would be widely accepted in everyday English. I actually find "If I were he" a bit stilted, though opinions may vary.

GPYI think "If I were him" would be widely accepted in everyday EnglishI always answer as though formal/written format. However, I agree that verbally I might fall into the same trap. It is in the same category as "It is I."
