There can be said to be differences between structure and function very clearly in that constituents have the same role in different positions in the structure. Here are some examples.
(a) John fightened me.
(b) I fear John.
In (a), the source of the fear is the subject; in (b) it is the direct object. The location of the fear is the object in (a) and it is the subject in (b). The roles are exactly the same, but clearly the structure is different.

Wow, that IS a tough one. " is the only one in which the source of "fury" had to come from within Mary, not John. " seems to be correct as well but in that case, the source of discust is John, not Mary.

Ah.. really?
I thought the reason why John infuriates Mary is that John did something to get on Mary's nerve, but not Mary made John angry.
Am I wrong? (You mean.. it's not John who made Mary angry?)

It does look like an SAT question that stumps most people. You are correct in that John was the reason Mary became infuriated. To be honest, I probably would've left this question for the very last. Perhaps an SAT "pro" can provide an answer that is more convincing.
