Varieties  (does this mean many types ? )of disease X requiring expensive special treatment have become less common during the past decade. Can disease X have many types ?  Let's us the disease X is AIDS. [Varieties / Types] of disease X ... Not many types; just types. It's in the plural because it is not already a plural.

Diseases can occur as different [kinds / types / varieties] of the same disease, yes. I don't if AIDS is one of these, but I know from my reading that there are different [kinds / types / varieties] of leukemia, for example, and different [kinds / types / varieties] of cancer as well. One [kind / type / variety] of a disease can be very different from another [kind / type /variety] of the same disease.

One variety of appendicitis is called chronic appendicitis.
Another variety of appendicitis is called acute appendicitis.
There are at least two varieties of appendicitis.
