Using 's'

Hello;
I'm Adsiz, and I wonder the difference between following two centences.

1. Many people have a close relationship with their pets.
2. Many people have close relationships with their pets.

and sometimes I cannot exactly decide to add 's' to some words. Do you have any advice for me?
