USe of colons or semicolons

I was tring to figure out if it would be approprite to use a colon with the words "is based off of:" or use a semicolon?

Anonymous I was tring to figure out if it would be approprite to use a colon with the words "is based off of:" or use a semicolon? It's "based on", and it doesn't need any punctuation marks at all. The movie Clueless is based on the novel Emma .
