Usage of "When" as connector
Hi Experts,
I am very confused with the usage of "When" as a connector to show time relationship. I searched but could not found any material that shows the proper usage of When with different tenses.
what is the ground rule for tenses in both the clauses joined by When in different tenses?
One rule i know "When you are talking about an event in the
future, use the present tense instead of the future tense with when in the time clause." for example
When I get home tonight, I'll call you.
but what about the below? what is the rule?
He ___ in that company when he had the chance.
A. should invest
B. would have been invested.
C. could be investing.
D. Should have invested.
Please help.

2. I sleep a lot (present) when it's cloudy outside (present).
3. I ran away (past) when I saw the lion (past).
4. I had left already (past perfect) when she arrived (past).
