Usage of No sooner,Hardly, Scarcely

Please check the following and could you please tell me how to complete the remaining sentences and I want to know the rules behind this. 1) As soon as the teacher came into the class all the students stood up. My Answer: No sooner did the teacher come into the class than all the students stood up. Hardly_____________________________________________________________ Scarcely____________________________________________________________ 2) As soon as the thief saw the police man, he started running. My Answer: No sooner did the theif see the police man, than he started running. Hardly______________________________________________________________ Scarcely____________________________________________________________ 3) As soon as the police received the information about the rally, they were alert. My Answer: No sooner did the police receive the information about the rally, than they were alert. Hardly______________________________________________________________ Scarcely____________________________________________________________ 4) As soon as I went home, I started playing. My Answer: No sooner did I go home than I started playing. Hardly______________________________________________________________ Scarcely____________________________________________________________ 5) As soon as the bell rang, all the students came out of their class rooms. My Answer: No sooner did the bell ring than all the students came out of the class. Just substitute hardly...when and scarcely...when for no sooner...than. They all work the same way:

Hardly/Scarcely had the teacher come into the class when all the students stood up.

I've read on the internet sentences beginning with Hardly and Scarcely and followed by that or before, instead of when. For example, Hardly had I arrived home that the telephone rang, or Hardly had I arrived home before the telephone rang. This instead of Hardly had I arrived home when the telephone rang. Is this possible?

It is possible only in that people do it. If they do it on a graded paper, though, they will lose points. 'That' seems particularly mindless to me.
