Usage of 'as'
Example:
They were pulled into this mess as he was.
My question is: do we need a comma before 'as'? They were pulled into this mess, as he was.
Or, is a comma unnecessary? Can we also say 'just as he was'?

I prefer a comma. I think it makes the sentence easier to parse. "...
