Too many mosquitoes/flies have appeared these days.

Which verb should I use here?
(There are times (especially after a little rain, etc) when flies/mosquitoes appear out of nowhere and just plague a place.
After the rain, too many flies have come/appeared?
[The speaker is talking about his experience of a short stay at his friend's farmhouse. Do you think the underlined phrases are OK?]
As the night would approach, a huge swarm of mosquitoes would raid/plague the house. This continued for at least as long as we stayed there.
