Hello, everyone!Need help with this one... not difficult, but I can't think of the proper word, the exact meaning:"They were going strong for the top at 8.580 metres when they were last seen but they never came down again".I would appreciate your help. Thanx!

I'd say "they were doing well trying to reach the top".
