This novel is set in a Chinese village before World War One. Today is the protagonist Wang Lung's wedding day. He is passing through the long tunnel with gates at both ends
He turned to the right within the gate and after a moment was in Street of Barbers. There were few before him so early, only some farmers who had carried their produce into the town the night before in order that they might sell their vegetables at the dawn markets and return for the day's work in the fields. <The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck> I'd like to know if "There were few before him so early" means "It was so early that there were few before him." Thank you in advance for your help.
