There are two candidates for precidency?

What role does "for" have in these kinds of sentences?
"There are two candidates who are for precidency" doesn't sound nice to me.
So I don't want to say: "For precidency" has an adjectival function.
In my opinion, it is an adverbial phrase here because we can also say:
"For precidency, There are two candidates this year."
