There are / is
Side and Wellman p.133 the answer key suggests that the following sentence is correct:
There are one potato and two onions in the recipe.
Could that be right? I mean after there is /are usually the first noun determines the verb. Why would / could this one be correct?

When you have a compound subject (one potato and two onions) and the first element is singular, both 'is' and 'are' are correct.
