The word "row" in "the Green Mile"

Hello!

Could you help me, please? Recently I have watched "the Green Mile". When they executed a prisoner they said "row 1... row 2" and switched on buttons. What is "row" there? Can it be just a button to switch on electricity? The dictionary says it is a line.

Thank you!

Maria D Recently I have watched "the Green Mile". I have not seen this movie. But prisoners are detained in cells, and the cells are in rows.

I have not seen this movie. But prisoners are detained in cells, and the cells are in rows. Maybe the button turns on the killing agent (poison gas) in the cells.
