Can I say,

When they got on the train, the first-class carriage was air-conditioned and spacious. They felt joyful and comfortable in / on the train. Jason enjoyed watching scenery (outside) while / when his family enjoyed chatting / talking (each other).

I am quite certain many variations of multiple correct answers exist. My recommendation below is a more colloquial version. "When they got on the train, the first-class car was air-conditioned and spacious.
