The answers to all my "whys?"
Could somebody please help me figure out how to write this sentence grammatically? This is what I'm trying to say:
Growing up, "why" was one of the most used words in my vocabulary. Not having the answers to all my "whys", my parents would hand me a book.
I'm not sure if the comma should go inside or outside of the quotations. Since this is for a piece with a 300 character limit, I've had to cut a lot of parts of this sentence out, so I'm not even sure if it makes sense anymore. Any help would be much appreciated!

I can cut out even more with no trouble: Growing up, " Why? " was one of my most-used words. Not always having the answer, my parents would hand me a book.
