Sympathies
Does the term 'sympathies' make sense in this context:
"I'm sorry for your loss, and I offer my sympathies."
Note: By 'loss', I mean the death of a loved one (inlcuding a pet).

That's OK. The word condolences is in a higher register ie more formal. I'd hesitate to use either word for a pet.

I'd hesitate to use either word for a pet. I might just say eg I was very sorry to hear about Fluffy.
