Spray, spurt, spout, gush?
Hello Everyone,
Greeting!
Can you examine these sentences and choose suitable words for them?
Firemen were spraying / pumping / pouring water on the fire, using a fire hose.
Water was gushing / spurting / spouting / spraying from the fire hose.
Water is gushing / spurting / spouting / spraying from the water sprinkler to water the grass.
The water sprinkler is spouting / spraying / gushing / spurting water on the lawn.
In each sentence, which do you think is/are better?
Interestingly, I find words related to fast movement of water share the sound /p/, like spurt, spew, spout, and spray.
Burst, pop, and explode share the sound /b/ or /p/, maybe because of the characteristics of labial sounds.

I agree with Clive. You could use "spraying" for all four, but "gushing" also works on the second one, as he has pointed out.
