Softening the question? future in the past?
Dear teachers,
-What were we supposed to do next Sunday?
I have two questions about this sentence:
If Jenny's mother had promised Jenny that she was going to take Jenny to the zoo next Sunday. Jenny is so excited, she can't wait and she wants to make sure that her mother won't forget her promise, so she constantly reminds her mother every day by asking "What were we supposed to next Sunday?".
#1) Could you please tell me whether this question is appropriate in this case? If it's appropriate, what does it mean? If it's not, what would you ask Jenny's mother if you were her?
If Jenny's mother hadn't made any promises about what was going to do next Sunday. She simply wants to know what ideas Jenny's got.
#2) Will you feel that it is more polite to hear Jenny asking "What were we supposed to do Next Sunday?" than "What are we supposed to do next Sunday?"?
