Hello!
According to the book we use the present perfect with "since" if the action has a result in the present and you are talking about when it started.
We have seen Emma twice since the weekend.
We use the past perfect in a main clause with 'since' if the action is finished.
We had met several times since we were kids.
Can you explain that? "weekend" was in the past-the action is finished and "we were kids"- the action is finished, too?
