What is the difference in meaning between "keep silence" and "keep silent"? No difference whatsoever?

My perception is that "keep silence" is not idiomatic in ordinary modern English. g. "keep silence from intruding up on us" or whatever, but I would not have thought these would be too common.

My perception is that "keep silence" is not idiomatic in ordinary modern English. However, this graph is a bit of a puzzle to me:

They are essentially the same, but "keep silence" means to maintain the existing silence, while "keep silent" means for the individual not to make any noise. There isn't any appreciable difference.
