Does this mean I didn't sleep a lot?
Is this common phrasing?

I had a very short night.

I think this is a US phrase and I don't know it well. It probably means the opposite of what you suggest:

- I did very little last night, so I was able to go to bed early. I had a very short night

And, by contrast ...

- We were out all night celebrating - it was a long night. We didn't get much sleep

That means nothing to this American. An early night is one that found you in bed early, and a late one, late.
