Semicolon/comma

Do you use a semicolon to combine two sentences?
Or is a comma needed in some cases?
Here's an example from the book Looking For Alaska:

1. "He is a tall and skinny guy; ironically nicknamed Pudge by his friends." or
2. "He is a tall and skinny guy, ironically nicknamed Pudge by his friends."

A semi-colon joins two independent sentences, but ironically nicknamed Pudge by his friends is not an independent sentence. So, #1 is wrong. #2 is fine.
