Saying "to ditch" for "to leave"

Is it correct to say ditch for leave?

As in the sentence "We were playing seven minutes in heaven, but when I came out of the closet, everybody ditched."

I heard it in a movie, and at least "ditch" was what the word sounded like, but it could be some other word that I don't know.

Anybody's got an idea?
