"...rather..."

Question

It is not very often that I come across uses of adjectives which require this way of thinking, that is, the way we describe something not due to its nature, rather the way we come across it.

I find the bold part to be unnatural yet I am not sure if it is grammatically incorrect.

Is this how you would phrase it?

I have some grammatical concerns, but my main concern is that the intended meaning is not clear. I'd say this.
It is not very often that I come across uses of adjectives which require this way of thinking, that the manner in which we describe something is not due to its nature but rather to how we encounter it.
