Question for story set in US

I am thinking of a story opening with a couple in shock over something that has happened to their 33-year-old daughter. A former high school classmate of the daughter will call the parents to ask about her, not mentioning that she, the classmate, is now a newspaper reporter. Could a reporter get away with this in real life?
