How would I be able to recognize obligatory adverbial in a clause?

The simple answer is to take the word or phrase out and see if the sentence is still grammatical and makes sense ...
- I put the book on the shelf.
- I put the book.
"I put the book" is not a good sentence and therefore "on the shelf" is an obligatory adverbial phrase.
