Punctuating intials

When I was In Washington D.C.. I asked them how do you end a sentence that already ends with a period from the initials D.C.? They said when using initials D.C., no one knows for certain what to do at the end of D.C.!

Anyone else know? (and no, dropping the periods in DC all together is not acceptable (to me))

Thanks =)
