Proud of you??

Question

Is it correct grammer to say "I am proud of you"?  How can a person be proud of someone else?  I could say " I am proud to know you"  or "You should be proud of yourself"  but saying "I am proud of you" doesn't really make sense to me.  I would appreciate others' opinions.

Yes, it is fine. You can be proud of others, of your country, of your new car, etc. Here is definition #1 from Dictionary.com:

*adj* (foll by of, an infinitive, or a clause )
1.	pleased or satisfied, as with oneself, one's possessions, achievements, etc, or with another person, his or her achievements, qualities, etc

Yes, it's correct grammar.

When you are proud of someone else, it suggests you have some kind of relationship with them that causes their accomplishment to make you feel increased self-esteem.

eg I am proud of my colleague because he won a Nobel prize.

eg I am proud of my son.

But not eg 'I am proud of President Obama', because I have no relationship or connection with him.

But his wife, or even other Americans, could be proud of him.
