Question

Can anyone please proofread this paragraph? Does this makes sense? My college teacher is checking for grammar/syntax/etc.

Religion is part of the social system. Religion shapes and reshapes culture.
I revised it because I am learning from the book that there is a humanistic and interpretive approach to “religion. Jesus Christ didn’t create Christianity. Buddha didn’t create Buddhism. Society created religion. Society wants to make the world understandable through symbols (beliefs, ideas, rituals, etc.). The symbols dictate how followers/society should act. For example, the Christian Cross motivates some followers to participate in self-denial because socially, self- denial is considered a virtue that leads to happiness. Also, religion is beyond worshiping a deity. Religion can be reading a newspaper every morning "religiously" or watching Sunday night football. They have become popular rituals. The rituals give meaning to society and to the individual. The Christian Cross use to be part of religion and now the symbol has become part of the culture (i.e. fashion).

The symbols dictate how the followers or society should act. 2. My definition represents the functionalist viewpoint. Religion as a system of beliefs, ideas, etc. (which is part of society), takes away the theological aspects of “religion”. Functionalists study religion scientifically, rationally and empirically. There’s no need to know the origin. A functionalist may ask what a symbol like a Cross does to a believer (or non-believer) rather than what the Cross is. Symbols (doesn’t have to be religious) can invoke moods and motivations within an individual or a group (emic/etic). Functionalist claim that society has the power to invoke those moods/motivations (by doing rituals and by making the symbols sacred). Those rituals give meaning to a society. My definition also represents family resemblances because not all symbols/rituals mean the same to an individual/ group (i.e. swastika symbol)

3. I think my definition is polythetic because there are many different beliefs, ideas, etc. that has similar purposes but and none of them are identical to the group/individual. For example, NFL Football and flag-football have similar characteristics they aren’t shared. Also, a believer or non-believer interprets an object differently. Football can be considered sacred to a fanatic or profane to someone who sees the sport as violent. And female and male football share the same characteristics but not everyone (mostly men) agrees that female football is a sport.

4. My definition has a more reductionstic view because it does focus on how religion shapes/reshape society, politics and the psychological mind. It reduces the theology/origin of religion. Rituals and symbols have a role to play in society. My definition of religion can be broken down into simpler pieces. First, religion's role is to control the human environment. Second, it explains the existence of the world we see. Lastly, religion shows the conceptions of what is right and wrong in the human world.
