I'm not completely happy with the opening sentence--if I were writing it, I'd simply say: "What could she do to us?" Perhaps the author intends it to be this formal.

Just to note that some teachers encourage students to write less formally and so, in this case, "were not" and "could not" could be made into contractions. Some books instruct that "year-old" should be hyphenated.
